On May 8th, 2012, it came to our attention that Square Enix servers were attacked by an unknown 3rd party. Countermeasures were taken immediately following this discovery.
Details on this attack and subsequent countermeasures can be found below.
■Attack Details
・Square Enix servers were attacked remotely from a foreign location.
・The attack was targeted at the temporary suspension feature for Square Enix security tokens.
■Attack Result
・A total of 19 Square Enix security tokens were temporarily suspended.
■Countermeasure Details
•Processes responsible for security token-related features have been shut down on affected servers.
•All suspended security tokens have been reactivated.
•Remote access to affected servers has been disabled.
* The attack was limited to the temporary suspension feature for Square Enix Security tokens.
No personal information was stored on the affected servers.
There was no possibility for a 3rd party to gain access to Square Enix IDs, passwords or other personal information at any time.
* In case similar attacks should happen in the future, neither Square Enix security token systems nor Square Enix accounts will be affected due to the countermeasures taken.
We will continue to monitor the situation and work on additional security measures to thwart any future attacks on our network structure.
